Hackmaster 5e seems to fill a similar niche as Dungeon Fantasy by GURPS and Mythras Classic Fantasy that is as a crunchy, simulation-style AD&D emulation. Additionally, the books are the most beautiful RPG books I have randomly encountered. The player chooses which skill they would like to use for a situation, and they might not always choose the most appropriate one, making it more difficult. Another interesting feature was that it’s deliberately designed so that there’s overlap between skills. This means almost anyone can take a turn at any time, so you don’t necessarily have to wait a long time for your turn. You can often change your action after you started it to adjust to what’s happening. The combat rounds are second by second, and each action takes a number of seconds. Here are a few things that stood out to me. There’s some good information about the game in the episode.įor players and GMs who like old school lethality and power levels, as well as detailed rules, it is a great system. I also played in a demo run by the person interviewed on this podcast episode about Hackmaster. So there are low commitment opportunities to try the game. There is also an online Hackmaster convention the weekend of May 21st. If you join the Hackmaster discord, someone is running an occasional open table mercenary campaign on weekends.
